A Haunted School in Kanpur
A Haunted School in Kanpur
In the city of Kanpur, many years ago, a chilling story unfolded that still lingers in the minds of every child who hears it. The tale is so spooky that it makes people think twice about what might happen in that place. Right next to Anwarganj Railway Station, there’s a building that looks like an ordinary bungalow from the outside. But inside, it houses a primary school with a dark secret.
This school might seem normal at first glance, but the deeper you go, the creepier it gets. People say you can hear strange voices calling your name or feel like someone’s watching you. When you try to follow the voice, it feels like it’s chasing you instead. Despite being a small school, everyone in the area knows its haunting tale.
The story revolves around a teacher named Naina, who had just finished her degree. During her studies, she used to tutor kids, but now she was looking for a full-time teaching job. She applied to many places but kept getting rejected. One day, while sitting at home, she got a call saying she’d been hired at the school next to Anwarganj Railway Station. Naina was thrilled. She didn’t care if it was a big or small school—she just wanted to teach kids.
When Naina arrived at the school, she was shocked. The place looked abandoned, almost like ruins. There were hardly any students or staff, which seemed odd for a primary school. She asked another teacher why there were so few kids. The teacher just smiled and walked away without answering, which Naina found very strange. She thought maybe the area didn’t have many houses nearby, so there weren’t many kids to attend.
The staff explained her job role and subjects she’d teach. Everything seemed fine until Naina stepped out of the staff room and noticed a student standing alone in a corner, staring at a locked door. She asked him what he was doing. The boy said, “He called me here. He’s inside that door, asking me to open it.” Confused, Naina asked who “he” was, but the boy just ran away.
Curious, Naina thought about checking the door herself. Maybe someone was trapped inside? As she approached, she saw a big lock on it. Before she could do anything, a staff member stopped her, saying, “Don’t go in there. That door’s been locked for years. No one opens it. It’s just ruins.” Naina mentioned what the boy said, but the staff member brushed it off, saying kids make things up. Since it was her first day, Naina decided not to overthink it and went back to the staff room.
As evening came, a heavy rain started. All the students and staff left, but Naina didn’t have an umbrella and no one came to pick her up. She was alone in the school. Suddenly, she saw a woman approaching her from a distance. The woman introduced herself as Meena and asked if her husband, Sudhanshu, was inside. She said he worked at the school and usually came home by evening but hadn’t today.
Naina, puzzled, said it was her first day and she hadn’t heard of anyone named Sudhanshu. Meena seemed surprised, saying he came to the school every morning. Naina invited Meena inside to wait out the rain. As they sat in the staff room, Naina kept glancing at the locked door. Meena noticed and asked why she was staring at it. Naina explained that everyone had warned her not to go near it, which made her curious.
Naina stood up, tempted to open the door since no one else was around. As she approached it, Meena’s voice stopped her: “Don’t open that door. It’s cursed. He lives inside.” Naina demanded to know who “he” was, but before Meena could answer, the school’s lights went out. Panicked, Naina turned to reassure Meena, but she was gone. Naina called out for her, but there was no response. Alone in the dark, Naina decided to open the door anyway.
As she unlocked it, she felt a hand on her shoulder and a strange voice—not quite male or female—whispered, “I told you not to open it.” Terrified, Naina turned around, but no one was there, just darkness. She quickly shut the door and ran to grab her bag from the staff room. As she reached the school gate, she heard Meena’s voice again, coming from inside the locked room, saying she’d found “him” and was taking him with her.
Naina, determined to help, ran back and opened the door again. This time, she saw Meena hanging from the ceiling. Shocked and horrified, Naina tried to flee, but the door slammed shut. When she looked back, Meena was standing on the floor, looking like a lifeless corpse. Meena repeated, “I told you not to open the door. Only Sudhanshu was supposed to.” Naina, frozen with fear, didn’t respond. Meena added, “He hasn’t come back in years.”
Desperate, Naina banged on the door until it finally opened. She grabbed her bag and ran out of the school, glancing back to see Meena screaming inside the room before the door slammed shut again. Naina never returned to the school. When her parents asked why she quit, she told them everything. Her father revealed the truth: years ago, a staff member’s wife committed suicide in that room, and her spirit is said to haunt it. That’s why the school has so few students and teachers—people are too scared to stay.
Locals say many children have seen a woman wandering in that room, sitting on benches, or hanging from the ceiling. After hearing this, Naina quit the job for good. This haunted school in Kanpur is one of many such places in our country. Some say these stories are hidden to keep the schools running, but they warn that such places are dangerous, especially for kids. Who knows, the next strange incident could happen closer to home.
